Abstract
This study finds both direct and indirect links between Ovambo concepts of masculinity and the spread of HIV/AIDS. Drawing on information collected through interviews and group discussions, the authors show that the behaviors that most Ovambo men are encouraged to emulate increase the risk of exposure to the HIV virus, especially heavy drinking and having multiple sexual partners, even after marriage. They recommend HIV/AIDS prevention programs address changing these unhealthy attitudes.
