Abstract
This is a general historical and ethnographic survey of the Ambo (Ovambo) people. Historical aspects covered include geographical features of the area, the colonial division of the people between Portuguese-occupied Angola in the north and German (and after 1915 South African) ruled Nambia in the south, increased labor migration to mining sites, and the arrival of European missionaries. Ethnographic topics include subsistence activities, life cycle events, art, prominent mythological themes, traditional religious practices, kinship groups, clanship, and tribal relations.
