Abstract
This document is concerned with terms of kinship and corresponding patterns of expected behavior among the Thonga of Southern Africa. It argues that a person who knows the kin term which unites him/her with another person will know at once what kind of social behavior is expected of him/her towards that person. The author tries to show this by discussing how in Thonga society individuals from different kinship categories behaved towards each other. One example of these relationships includes the complex set of expectations in Thonga culture governing a man's relationships with his mother's brother and vice versa.
