Abstract
This is an excellent survey of religious and medical practices as observed by the author while serving as a physician at the Salisbury Native Hospital in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). There are two parts to this work. The first part deals with Shona ideas about the causes of disease and the second part is concerned with the native medicine man and the diagnosis and cure of diseases through magical or medical means. This source also includes information on medical treatment of pregnancy and on death.
