This source is a follow-up study to Colson (1967). It is a description, analysis and interpretation of the changes in social organization of the Gwembe Tonga from approximately 1957 to 1965. They are briefly described as they were until 1957, when they inhabited and cultivated the alluvial plains of the Zambezi River. (A detailed account of Gwembe life before the move is provided in the earlier work.) This organization is then compared with the changes brought about in their lives as a consequence of their forced evacuation from the area to be covered by the waters rising behind the newly constructed Kariba Dam. Changes in family life, kinship relations, the economy, political organization and activity, and their religious and ritual practices and beliefs are highlighted. Their changing relation to the rest of Zambia and especially their increasing contact with its urbanized and nationally-oriented government bureaucracy is emphasized throughout. Information on the government's plans concerning the dam and its related policies toward the Tonga have been marked for Category 653. Other government actions, whether originating from the colonial, or the later independent government, have been marked for the relevant 65* categories.
