AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
In this work, the author attempts to describe the institutions of the Gwembe (Valley) Tonga before the construction of the Kariba Dam forced them to evacuate their homes and resettle in other areas. Throughout most of the book, Colson discusses their family, religion, politics, and economics. In the last chapter, she indicates how resettlement has greatly affected social life, and states that these people must be given help in solving the economic, social, and religious problems precipitated by resettlement. She also predicts how social conditions are likely to change in the coming years. Appendices C and D provide information on the resettlement programs in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) and Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), respectively.
