The clans of Rwanda: an historical hypothesis

Abstract
This article is concerned with the concept of clan as a historical category in the Rwandan context. It argues that clan changes in Rwanda were not simply a result of individuals moving from one clan to another, or members of one clan dispersing over the land, but also a result of changes in the very conceptual categories from which clan identities derived.
