Cannibalism: a Zande text

Africa26Published In 1956 • Pages: 73-74

By: Evans-Pritchard, E. E. (Edward Evan).

AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
In this very short article, Evans-Pritchard records verbatim an Azande text on cannibalism taken from an elderly informant who presumably had reliable knowledge of Azande culture and society prior to the establishment of the Anglo-Egyptian administration over the Azande and the resultant formal suppression of cannibalism. Although the author does not offer annotation of the text or interpretation of cannibalism, the text itself reveals some insight into the nature of this institution.
