Abstract
This article focuses on the pre-colonial history of the Ngonde people of Malawi. It seeks to reconstruct the nature of Ngonde society by exploring the socio-economic consequences of migration and settlement of peoples to the area. In doing so, the author rejects earlier arguments which attribute the rise of Ngonde Kingdom to the expansion of commerce.
