Abstract
This source analyzes livestock classification and naming of individual livestock among the Turkana. In the Turkana livestock classification system the criteria for classification are age/sex, coat color, horn shape, ear shape (including ear markings), and brand marks. In addition to discussing these criteria, Ohta describes and analyzes the livestock management techniques relevant to producing particular categories of livestock. The author also discusses individual animal identification through naming, examines the etymologies of animal names, and discusses the significance of individual animal identification in the herd complex of the Turkana.
