The Masai: their language and folklore
The Clarendon Press • Oxford, England • Published In 1905 • Pages:
By: Hollis, Alfred Claud, Eliot.
Abstract
This an account of the Maasai written by a British colonial officer. Except for a large section on Maasai language and grammar, the rest of the book is translations of Maasai texts dealing primarily with folklore, stories, proverbs, and songs. Data is presented in narrative, disjointed fashion and there is no attempt at organizing it nor treating it from any theoretical viewpoint. A wealth of data is included on Maasai apparel, ornaments, medicine, diet and weapons. A lenghty introduction by C. Eliot attempts a brief ethnographic summary of the Maasai, locates them geographically and delves briefly into their racial and linguistic affiliations with neighboring peoples.
