Abstract
This article discusses recent changes in the social institutions and cultural practices which have traditionally supported high fertility among the Kikuyu of Kenya. Based on data collected from one peri-urban and one rural communities, the author observes that children continued to be valued in both communities. Yet, the author also noted a general pattern of fertility decline in both localities due to community-level disparties in the availablity of contraceptives and employment opportunities, as oppose to changes in cultural meanings and institutions governing reproductive pratices.
