Nyoro marriage and affinity

Africa28 (1) • Published In 1958 • Pages: 1-22

By: Beattie, J. H. M.

Abstract
Beattie examines six different kinds of marital union practiced in Bunyoro, which vary in prestige and in the kind and amount of marriage payments (MUKAGA). In the second part of the article, he discusses marriage arrangements and ceremonies. In the last three sections he discusses the relationships between husband and wife, husband and affines (BUKO), men and their clanswomen's children (BWIHWA). In the hierarchical system of Banyoro kinship relations, the husband is subordinate to his wife's kin, and is addressed as 'child' by his parents-in-law. Beattie discusses in detail the etiquette, exchanges, obligations, and avoidances associated with affinal relationships. .
