Traditional values and current political behavior

king's men : leadership and status in buganda on the eve of independenceLondon • Published In 1964 • Pages: 294-335

By: Richards, Audrey I. (Audrey Isabel).

Abstract
In this study Richards examines twentieth century Buganda politics in light of traditional political values. The extremely personal, competitive, and high-stakes politics of traditional Buganda has influenced the way politics is waged in Uganda's modern bureaucratic state. Policy debates and political movements are rife with personal rivalries and vendettas. Richards also discusses the political events surrounding the deportation and temporary exile of the Buganda king (1953-1955). The shame, grief and love expressed by most Baganda towards their king at this time reflected the continued significance of the monarchy as a central element in the political and social life of Buganda.
