Abstract
This study examines the changes in occupational organization, social mobility and status differentiation in twentieth-century Buganda. Buganda's modernization has brought an increase in occupational roles which have become the more salient measure of social status, opening up new avenues of social mobility outside of the traditional system of royal patronage. The author looks at the various occupations within government, farming, commerce and industry, and examines their degree of openess to the Baganda ethnic group and to Baganda of different socioeconomic backgrounds.
