Abstract
This is a comprehensive history of Buganda kingship (1300s-1884) by a former prime minister, Apolo Kaggwa (in office: 1889-1926). It is based on oral histories, which the author compiled from nearly 300 informants (72 principal informants), including royal wives and descendants, clan heads and leading ritual officers. Another source of information were royal tombs, and historical relics, such as royal jawbones and umbilical cords, drums, weapons and fetishes. Each chapter is devoted to a king and documents the succession process, wives, descendents, clan relationships, wars, capitals and political intrigues. The history of the Buganda kingdom has been one of gradual expansion and centralization. The appendices include the dynastic genealogy, list of royal wives, and names and locations of royal shrines and capitals.
