Native marriage in Buganda

Abstract
This is a description of the two types of marriage in Buganda--native and Christian. The two types correlate with different social classes, the native type with the lower and the Christian with the upper. In general the native type is looked down upon by all, without having any legal recognition either by Church or by State. This lack of recognition, however, does not indicate a tendency to conform to the Christian type, but rather that the trend is to do away with any contractual agreements and to have more or less permanent liaisons. Mair is a British social anthropologist primarily interested in applied anthropology.
