Abstract
This document offers an excellent account of Shilluk settlement organization. The author discusses the relationship of lineages to community organization, the manner in which hamlets within a settlement develop and die out, and the role of the founding lineage in the community. The age-grade organization which is seldom mentioned in other documents is described and its function as a means of uniting different kinship groups for defense is examined. The author is an ethnologist.
