Abstract
In this article the author discusses the institution of slavery among the Banen, who recognized three social levels: original settlers, recent immigrants, and slaves. Slaves were prisoners of war, kidnapped travelers, or violators of Banen law and customs. They were identified by special tattoos and were bought and sold in markets. Slaves could marry and have children.
