Some principles of exchange and investment among the Tiv
American anthropologist • 57 (1) • Published In 1955 • Pages: 60-70
By: Bohannan, Paul.
Abstract
This article deals with Tiv ideas of exchange as expressed in their language, some traditional modes of investment and exchange (based on a ranked hierarchy of categories of exchangeable commodities), and the impact of Western economy on various aspects of subsistence, exchange and investment. Both the Tiv categories of exchange and the synthetic categories of Bohannon are presented in such a way that the activities to which they refer and the ideas they embody cut across generally understood Western meanings of the terms economic, exchange, investment, and motivation of wealth. This ingenious device helps to convey to the reader some idea of the complex of feelings and attitudes with which these ideas are invested by the Tiv.
