Abstract
This book is a cultural history of the Asante Kingdom that was written to accompany the 1981 exhibition, ‘Asante, Kingdom of Gold,’ at the Museum of Mankind in London. In the first half of the book, McLeod discusses Asante subsistence and settlement patterns, religion, court life, and artisanship. In the second half he discusses Asante material culture, including stools, gold-weights, brass vessels, weaving, pottery and woodcarvings. He does a good job of placing the artifacts in the context of Asante social, political, and religious life.
