Abstract
This is an analysis of demographic trends in Ashanti during the first half of the twentieth century. Population distribution and density, settlement patterns, and land use are discussed, and maps and charts illustrating the textual data are provided. Steel lists the main reasons advanced for the increase in Ashanti population in the 1940s, and cites the influence of the cocoa and gold mining industries, immigration and internal migration, and highway construction on population trends and urban development in Ashanti. The author, a lecturer in colonial geography at Oxford University, travelled in Ashanti during 1945-46 as a member of the Ashanti Social Survey (see document no. 7 for additional information on the nature of this Survey and geographical data contributed by Steel).
