Kinship and marriage among the Ashanti

african systems of kinship and marriageLondon • Published In 1950 • Pages: 252-284

By: Fortes, Meyer.

Abstract
In this article Fortes discusses what he considers to be the crucial problem for Ashanti men: the conflict between the requirements of marriage and fatherhood on the one hand and a man's obligation to his matrilineal kin on the other. Manifestations of this conflict as they appear in specific kin-groupings (husband and wife, parent and child, brother and sister, uncle and nephew, etc.) are analyzed within the broader contexts of the sib, lineage and extended family. Marriage customs and divorce are also discussed.
