AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Following some brief introductory materials on Kpelle ethnography, this work turns to a detailed discussion of how the traditional culture of the Kpelle affects the learning readiness, and perhaps even the thinking, of its children who are being taught educational concepts with strong Western connotations for which there are no previous counterparts in the culture. The authors discuss to a considerable extent points of conflict between the methods and intent of Western schools and indigenous beliefs and practices. In their exposition of the above, the authors present a great deal of information on native concepts of mathematics, enumeration, geometry, measurements (including that of time), language and logic, and the Kpelle world view.
