Abstract
Written by a colonial administrator early in the 20th century, this monograph covers a variety of topics including a history of the Dahomey kings and conquests from the first king (1625 ) to the French conquest (1898), administrative and justice systems, army, state revenue, religion, ancestral cult, family, marriage, childhood, property, legends, and fine art. Appendices include Dahomey reckoning of time and seasons, building and palace architectural plans, fetish objects, list of festishes of the tribes which made up the Dahomey Kingdom. The book is illustrated with photos and palace bas-reliefs depicting martial triumphs and royal insignia.
