Abstract
This brief article has as its central topic the influence of the physiography of the Bandiagara Escarpment on Dogon art. The author argues that the linearity of the Escarpment has inspired the linear forms in the art. More broadly, the role of the creative process, abstraction, and geometric order in Dogon art, and in art generally, are discussed. The points raised in the theoretical discussion are illustrated in examples of specific works of art, most notably cliff dwellings, decorative reliefs, sculpture and masks.
