Abstract
This relatively short book, a translation of “Dieu d'eau: entretiens avec Ogotemmêli” by Ralph Butler and revised by Audrey I. Richards and Beatrice Hooke, is a result of Griaule's interviews with one of the Dogon better-informed elders in October and November 1946. In order to reach a general audience and to make the character and significance of Dogon religious life more widely known, this record of the author's original observations is presented in an informal style in the form of conversation. A great deal of mythology is presented together with Griaule's reflections on the meaning of what he had been told.
