AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This book, based on fifteen months of field work in northeast Finnish Lapland during the period of January 1958 to April 1959, is a comprehensive study of Skolt Saami ethnography, with a focus on the community of Sevettijärvi and its environs. The work contains data on the geography of the region, its cultural history, economic patterns, social structure, childhood socialization processes, social and cultural changes, male-female roles in the society, and individual roles in relations to culturally defined statuses. Four appendices present information on the population census of Sevettijärvi (1958-1959), community reindeer ownership in the community, life histories of two prominent Skolt individuals, and a glossary of terms used throughout the text.
