AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a study of the nomadism of the Swedish mountain Saami with special emphasis on the role played by the SIIDA in the society. The SIIDA, according to Manker, is a group of families usually related by kinship ties who migrate together, share a commom reindeer herd, and live in dwellings in close juxtaposition to one another. This book contains discussions of the concept of SIIDA both from its historic and linguistic points of view; mountain Saami administration including information on the division of Fenno-Scandinavia into 'Lappmarks,' or, trading and taxation districts; a discussion of the underlying factors contributing to Lapp nomadism; dwelling styles and residential practices; and migration routes employed by the nomads in their seasonal travels.
