AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This monograph is a description of coast Saami life. The first part of the book describes the adjustment of Saami culture to its environment. A section is devoted to the history of the Saami, and Paine shows how settlement pattern has been influenced by changes in subsistence activities, acculturation, the quest for fuel, and other things. The book includes descriptions of the seasonal cycle and of non-traditional economic behavior, particularly agriculture and fishing. In the second part of the book Paine discusses three social groups; settlement, neighborhood, and village. The second part includes descriptions of kinship terminology, marriage restrictions, household and family relationships, and movement of persons within and outside of the area.
