AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is the first volume of a detailed account of Saami economy, culture history, and material culture based on data gathered by Itkonen during the years 1913-1947 supplemented by library research. The first part deals with geography, culture history, relations with neighboring countries and peoples, the church in Lappland, and various Saami settlements. Discussion of material culture occupies the remainder of the document. Although most of the data are on the Saami of Finland there are also data on Reindeer Saami, the Skolts, the Utsjoki, Fisher and Enontekiö Saami of other countries. In translating this book from the Finnish, the translator has condensed and in some cases omitted sentences that she felt were too detailed.
