Abstract
This is a history of the social and economic life of the Roman Empire mainly under the Flavians and the Antonines; however, the first chapter processed (chapter 3) discusses the rule of the Julii and the Claudii. To obtain this information, the author studied papyri, edicts and letters of the emperors, wax tablets, legislative acts, works of authors of the time, as well as the works of contemporary authors. The individual areas of social and economic life covered are: the army and its composition; the form of government in Rome and the provinces; characteristics and facilities of the cities of the Empire; public revenue; agriculture; banking; industry; foreign and domestic trade; sources of wealth of individuals and cities; social classes; and, landownership, tenure, and reform. Much specific information is given relating to the city and country life of the individual provinces outside Italy, as well as general information on mines and quarries, agriculture, landownership, social classes, and the life of peasants in these provinces.
