Social tension and inheritance by lot in three Greek villages
Anthropological quarterly • 52 (2) • Published In 1980 • Pages: 91-100
By: Herzfeld, Michael.
AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
In this article, Herzfeld looks at the widespread and variable practice of division of property by lot in rural Greece, where partible inheritance is the norm. Herzfeld argues that casting by lot is most likely to occur in instances where property transmission could provoke fraternal conflict. Therefore it is a commonly used device to avoid discord rather than a general means for transmitting specific kinds of property.
