Princeton University PressPrinceton, N.j.Published In 1991 • Pages: xvi, 305

By: Herzfeld, Michael.

AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Herzfeld examines inter-linked issues of housing, tourism, history, local-state relations, and identity in the Cretan port town of Rethemnos. How is identity negotiated in a town that has been at a cross currents of history (Venetian and Turkish) and since the 1960s experiencing a housing boom, one closely controlled by the state in the effort to preserve a national heritage? Herzfeld examines how morality and identity are entwined in the struggle between state historic conservation office, city planning board, and local families trying to make a living. Some of the specific issues he looks at are gambling, tax evasion, and informing.
