This article is based on a study of Ortner and Whitehead's analysis of gender as "prestige structures" in the interpretation of the gender system as it existed among the Gheg tribes of North Albania in the early twentieth century. Shryock explores the various concepts expressed in the Ortner and Whitehead study with particular emphasis on the values which have special meaning in the phrase "prestige structure: in terms of honor and the feud.
