AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a study of the practice of "couvade" in Albania, with indications of its presence in other parts of Europe. The couvade generally deals with the childbirth period in which the husband takes to his bed as if bearing a child, cares for it , and submits himself to fasting, purification, and taboos. In certain parts of Albania the term is also used to indicate a lazy person. Hasluck also presents some philological evidence for the use of the term in Albania.
