This study analyzes patterns of socio-cultural evolution in reference to household structure in the village of Orasac in central Serbia. The time focus of this paper is from the late eighteenth century to 1975. Halpern does not seek to define and evaluate the kinds of changes taking place in Orasac but merely to present them as background against which demographic and social structural changes have been occurring. Thus the changes in birth, death and marriage rates and the sequence of household changes described in the text can be better understood when projected against the complex broader background (p. 42). A series of forty-six tables and fifty-three figures at the end of this work summarize in graphic form various aspects of Orasac demographic data discussed in this paper.
