Abstract
In this comparative study of the three Kandyan villages (Leach's Pul Eliya, Yalman's Teripehe and the author's Rambukkoluwa) in which a formal critique of Yalman's views on kindred is included, Tambiah examines Sinhalese kinship structure in the frame of theory of the dialect between kinship fiction and fact.
