This article presents a structural analysis of the rules regulating marriage choices in West Bengal. The author notes four structural features that are significant in the Bengal variant of typical Indian marriage patterns, namely in regard to: arranged marriage, kin group exogamy/endogamy, intensification of ties, and extension of ties. Each of these features is described in great detail in the text. Klass suggests that the approach used here in the study of Bengal marriage regulations might provide '…greater insight for the study of Indian marriage patterns than the more traditional dichotomy: North India characterized by village exogamy, South Indian characterized by preferential close-kin marriage' (p. 951).]
