Problems of culture change in the Indian village

Abstract
This article describes changes that occurred in Senapur, a village in the Indian state of Uttar Predesh, in response to intervention programs by international donors and government agents. Focusing on local responses to selected programs in public health, education, and land reform, the article identifies a wide variety of cultural factors affecting the outcomes planned intervention. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of building intimate understanding between program planners and villagers.
