AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a study of the silk weaving industry in Kanchipuram, Madras. The author begins by examining the social characteristics of the silk weavers of the town with respect to caste, family structure, household organization, and settlement pattern. She then turns to consideration of the economic organization of the silk weaving industry and the effects of the co-operative movement on the industry's development. Please note that throughout this source, the term 'weavers' is used as a label for an occupational category rather than a caste designation.
