Abstract
This is an outline study of the characteristics and functioning of the caste system in the Tanjore village of Kumbapettai. It includes relatively full information on the spatial distribution, occupational specialties, and relative ritual ranking of the castes in the village, and on the social organization and internal structure of the three major 'caste communities' which they comprise. The interrelation of the caste with the village administration and economy is described, and the effects of internal migration and recent social and political change on the caste system are also examined.
