Egalitarian developmentalism, communist mobilization, and the question of caste in Kerala State, India

Abstract
This article discusses the continued marginalization of lower-caste agricultural workers (Dalits) and women in Kerala despite decades of improvements in social services brought about by political mobilization led by the communist party. The upper castes reasserted themselves and, instead of addressing the root causes of caste hierarchy and male domination, Kerala's communist politicians reproduced past inequalities in the name of modernization, secularism and, ironically, equality.
