AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a comprehensive report on the Kashmir Valley and its inhabitants written by a former Settlement Commissioner for the State of Kashmir and Jammu. The subjects covered extensively include geology, flora, fauna, archeology, traditional history, ethnic divisions, economic activities and the tax system. An administrator’s attention to taxation, especially of agricultural land, occupies an inordinate proportion of the text. Agriculture, land use, certain aspects of land tenure, and the operation of the state bureaucracy also receive detailed treatment. Despite this emphasis on economic phenomena, the book contains a relatively full account of the valley’s culture and natural environment.
