Abstract
This is a comprehensive account of reciprocal gift exchanges—especially those around marriage—that occur in a rural Punjabi village, serving to cement ties between castes, professions, lineages and villages. The author describes how women are at the center of these exchanges and maintain exact records of each transaction. Modern changes in land ownership, inheritance, education, and economic opportunities outside the village have curtailed some of the ceremonies, but ties to community and people remain strong.
