Abstract
This is an account of a British colonial administrator's inspection of several villages in a new canal colony, based on interviews with inhabitants. Descriptions include who the new settlers are, the sizes of their families and farms, household budgets and financing, water costs and shortages, moneylenders, and local corruption. An assessment of the overall government costs of the program is also given.
