Abstract
This is a description of Garo clan organization. Members of the same clan (MACHONG) residing in the same village are called MAHARI, and represent the smallest effective unit of Garo clan organization. The MAHARI is also the common property-holding unit. Marriage within the MACHONG is considered incestuous. Clans are affiliated with one of three larger groups, called SATCHI, which were the original exogamous units. However, marriage within a SATCHI has become more common. A man is related to two MAHARIs, his own (usually the same clan as his father-in-law) and his wife's. Women have little to do with their spouses' MAHARI, except when the spouse leaves or dies, then a replacement is sought from the same MAHARI.
