The Psyche of the Garos

By: Sinha, Tarunchandra.
Abstract
Sinha takes a narrow psychoanalytical approach in discussing Garo culture, finding incestuous desires in myths and the NOPANTHE, or bachelor dormitory system, and fear of castration in Garo totemism and fear of blood. Nevertheless he does give fair accounts of bachelor dormitories, marriage, funeral rites, spirits of the dead (MIMANG), headhunting, and sexual practices. He also provides full treatments of several creation and origin myths and a list of 42 gods (METTE), along with the kinds of sickness and cures (sacrifices) associated with them.
