Abstract
This work consists of seventy-one myths collected by the author in the field from September 1977 to June 1979. These tales were further verified and additional information added over a period of three months in the autumn of 1981. Following a very brief introduction to Chewong ethnography, the author turns her attention to a study of the significance of the oral literature to the people, and then prefaces the actual presentation of the mythological texts themselves with a background discussion on cosmology, an important consideration in understanding the tales. The texts of the myths and legends that follow, constituting the major and concluding section of this source are organized by themes into six sections: The mythological origins of the Chewong; hidden identities (i.e., a member of a species of conscious beings pretending to belong to another species); harmful beings; rules (i.e., taboos and prohibitions); legends dealing with the culture hero Bongso; and finally a brief selection of miscellaneous tales.
