Abstract
This source is a study of the principles which govern Chewong behavior. To this end the author examines three categories of relationships in Chewong society: interpersonal relationships, relationships between men and women, and relationships between human beings and the supernatural. This is followed by an examination of Chewong concept of consciousness, which includes a detailed discussion of the ruwai, or soul. The author concludes that a principle she calls “separation” – of keeping prescribed things apart – underlies many Chewong ideas and practices.
